Following the panel discussion last week, I realised that my current design concept doesn't really have a valid tautoko - I am not really advocating for a particular collective of people. Thus, I am not abiding by Massey's Performing on unCommon Ground brief. I have spent the day researching into the districts around the site to get learn more about the people that I could be advocating for, and what they need or want in their community and in doing so trying to find something that I am passionate about to create my Kaupapa.
Through my research I understood that Kreuzberg had a strong Turkish background and it was part of West Berlin through until the reunification of Germany in 1990. What really interests me is the fact that a lot of the Kreuzberg youth were significantly influenced to the Western Hip-Hop culture through the children of American servicemen while Germany was divided. This influence has now evolved to make the Kreuzberg area the centre for rap and breakdance in Berlin.
This is the music and dance genre that really interests me so I have decided that I am going to pursue this idea.
